My name is Julia Shirar and I am half American/Half German and have been living in NYC for a couple years now. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where I’m from (I’ve moved internationally 9 times in my life so far) but after studying in London, I moved here to pursue my interest in research. Outside of work, I am doing a lot of yoga, running, hiking, eating lots of yummy nutritious food and trying to hang out with dogs.
Dogs are my favorite animals and always have been. I grew up with several family dogs and throughout the years, I’ve been a dog walker and sitter to many friends and neighbors. I love surrounding myself with dogs on a daily basis. Since managing a retail space in the UES, where we allowed dogs in with offerings of dog treats and a water bowl, I have become especially comfortable with dogs of all sizes and breeds.
I also have a lot of experience with rescue dogs. My family and I used to live in Brazil, where we adopted a “viralata” or a Brazilian street dog that had been on the streets for two years prior. Lucy became very situated with us and she became a third sister to me and left this world having lived in as many continents as I have. I also adopted a rescue from one of our RuffCity pet parents about a year ago! Her name is Maddie and she is my soul animal—no doubt about it.
I understand the love you have for your pet and that it’s one of the most beautiful and special relationships in your life! I always tell my friends we should model ourselves after dogs (and they laugh at me of course) because dogs never lose their passion for connection and that’s what life is about. Needless to say, I am so happy to be apart of the RuffCity Team and cannot wait to spend some quality time with your furry friend!
